Emergency Mutual Aid Assistance to Veterans

1. Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation
This pillar focuses on advocating for and supporting veterans in all aspects of their lives. Programs include assistance with VA claims, ensuring access to healthcare, supporting homeless veterans, helping with the transition to civilian life (including the GI Bill), and supporting Operation Comfort Warriors to help veterans.

Benefits and Claims Assistance:
American Legion service officers are trained to help veterans and their families with claims at no cost.
Advocacy:
The American Legion serves as a large veteran advocacy organization, representing veterans and their families in Congress and at the local level.
Community and Support:
The American Legion provides support to veterans and their families, which can include assistance during times of need.
Community engagement: The post is involved in community programs and advocacy efforts aimed at strengthening local communities and celebrating service members.
Peer Support and Networking:
The organization serves as a hub for veterans to connect, share experiences, and find peer support as they transition from military service.
Advocacy for Benefits:
Harold Washington Post, are major advocates for veterans' rights, working to secure benefits like those established by the G.I. Bill.
Health and wellness: The organization advocates for veterans' health care and provides resources for physical and mental health issues, including connections to PTSD resources and suicide prevention services.
Homeless veteran outreach: Harold Washington American Legion post work to aid homeless veterans by assisting with temporary housing, mentoring, and job training.

Honor and remembrance: Members participate in ceremonies for POW/MIA awareness and provide honor guards for veteran funerals. The Legion also supports memorials and monuments.
